Umlalazi Mtunzini Kwazulu Natal

Our thoughts

Home of the Palm-nut Vulture, one of the rarest birds of prey, beautiful beaches and the largest mangrove in South Africa

The Trip We Didn’t Plan (But Absolutely Loved)

Mtunzini wasn’t on our original list of GoandBeyond campsites to explore. We were joining some friends from Durban Walking Tours for a quick camping weekend and decided to check it out. Just two hours from Durban, and you feel like you’ve stepped into a completely different world. Quiet, green, and full of wild charm, Umlalazi Campsite quickly won us over.

Nature in Every Direction

This spacious campsite is just 1 km from the relaxed coastal town of Mtunzini, set within the Umlalazi Nature Reserve and managed by Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife. It’s peaceful, unpretentious, and full of space to breathe. Zebra and duiker roam freely through the camp, keeping the grass nicely trimmed. Monkeys, on the other hand, are mischievous and opportunistic, keep your snacks locked up, or you’ll find them helping themselves!

Birdwatcher's Paradise

One of the biggest highlights? This is one of the few places in South Africa where you can spot the rare Palm-nut Vulture, a must-see for birders. The area is rich with wildlife, and the insect and bird diversity is truly impressive. Whether you're into photography, birdwatching, or just enjoying the sounds of nature, you’ll feel right at home.

Explore South Africa’s Largest Mangrove Forest

The mangrove forest here is the largest in South Africa and a standout feature of the reserve. You can explore it on foot via boardwalks or hop on a local barge trip along the Umlalazi River. The boat ride to the river mouth gives off mini-Chobe vibes, calm, scenic, and surrounded by dense green.

Simple Adventures, Natural Beauty

  • You don’t need much planning here. Nature offers all the adventure:

  • Endless beach walks with hardly another soul in sight

  • Shaded coastal forest trails to explore

  • Fishing, kayaking, and boat trips along the river

  • Zebra, duiker, and abundant birdlife right at your campsite

The setup is simple, this is rustic, unplugged camping. No frills, just you and the outdoors.

Umlalazi Campsite Review

Nature, Peace, and a Bit of Adventure

If you're looking for a relaxing, nature-filled getaway on the KZN North Coast, Umlalazi Campsite near Mtunzini is a hidden gem worth discovering. Nestled within the Umlalazi Nature Reserve, this campsite offers a quiet, coastal escape surrounded by indigenous forest, estuary views, and abundant birdlife.

We recently stayed here for a long weekend, and while it’s not a luxury setup, it’s perfect if you love basic camping close to nature.

Campsite & Facilities

The camping plots are spacious, mostly shaded, and reasonably private. Each site has access to power points and water. The ablution blocks are clean and functional, though fairly basic, hot water was reliable during our stay. There's also a communal washing-up area and braai facilities.

Nature & Wildlife

The real magic of Umlalazi is the natural setting. You’ll likely spot fiddler crabs, vervet monkeys, and maybe even a fish eagle if you're lucky. Early mornings are quiet and filled with birdsong, and the walking trails (especially the Mangrove Swamp Trail) are peaceful and scenic.

Nearby Attractions

You’re just a short walk from the pristine beach, which is usually uncrowded. The Umlalazi Lagoon is great for canoeing or paddleboarding. Mtunzini town is nearby for supplies, coffee shops, or a quick stop at the local market.
