Skukuza Kruger National Park

Our thoughts

Skukuza Rest Camp is truly the heartbeat of Kruger National Park — lively, well-equipped, and full of character. It’s not usually the kind of camp we’re drawn to, as we tend to prefer the quieter, smaller spots, but Skukuza genuinely surprised us.

Its central location made it an excellent base for our game drives, and the convenience of having a shop, restaurant, swimming pool, and even a doctor on site was a real comfort when we weren’t feeling our best. With its mix of comfort, accessibility, and incredible wildlife sightings, Skukuza proved to be a memorable stop and a great introduction to the energy and excitement of Kruger.

SKUKUZA GALLERY

Skukuza kept us well entertained, even if it took us a moment to adjust to the busier feel of the campsite. We treated ourselves to delicious food and drinks at the iconic railway station and genuinely enjoyed the fun, energetic side of staying at Skukuza.

Skukuza Campsite Review

Skukuza Kruger National Park — Its central location makes it an ideal base for exploring both the southern and central regions of Kruger — areas known for their incredible game densities. We had excellent sightings in every direction, from elephants along the Sabie River to lions and leopards on the move in the early mornings.

The campsites are large and well-shaded, providing plenty of space and comfort. The ablutions are spotless, and there’s a lovely swimming pool — the perfect spot to cool off in the heat of the day. Skukuza’s size means it offers everything you might need: a shop, restaurant, fuel station, ATM, post office, and even a doctor on-site, which we appreciated when we weren’t feeling our best.

Just a short walk away is the old train station, now home to Skukuza’s elite lodge on the rail tracks. The refurbished train restaurant on the platform serves excellent food — the pizzas were a standout — and there’s even a small shop with a few treats. For sundowners, the outdoor bar on the platform makes a great stop with a relaxed, social atmosphere.

The camping area is huge, with plenty of sites to choose from. Across from the main camp area you’ll find more shops, a butcher, additional restaurants, an ice-cream stall, and a deck overlooking the Sabie River. It’s a lively, convenient space, though I still prefer the quieter, more scenic deck at Lower Sabie Camp for soaking in river views.

Of course, the downside of Skukuza is its size and the sheer number of tourists passing through each day. It can feel busy, especially compared to the park’s smaller camps. That said, the southern region of Kruger, where Skukuza sits, is home to some of the park’s highest concentrations of wildlife, making it worth the energy and activity.

Skukuza is also famous for its unique golf course, where it’s not unheard of to spot lions or crocodiles between holes. Nearby, a small dam with a peaceful bird hide offers a quieter moment — we’ve even seen waterbuck wander in for a drink.

So, while Skukuza might not have the intimacy of Kruger’s smaller camps, it delivers an unmatched mix of accessibility, comfort, and incredible wildlife. For travellers who want a little bit of everything — convenience, good food, great sightings, and the full Kruger buzz — Skukuza is a destination in its own right.
